The drain is blocked problem

Reported in the The drain is blocked category by Gloucestershire County Council at 13:37, Thursday 31 July 2025

FixMyStreet ref: 7960676.

Please find attached photos showing the extensive buildup and blockage of the storm / rain water drainage gully system which runs alongside my property.

Convent Lane is a single track road which has a reasonably steep gradient to it in many areas, especially alongside my property, which can be treacherous when wet or icy if not managed properly. You are obviously aware of the potential hazards as you do supply and maintain grit bins along the road.

Along the section of the road bordering my property (Redwood Barn), there is only one gully channel (as opposed to one each side of the road), and as you will be fully aware, it forms an essential part of the effective operation and management of the road/ highway.

A correctly operating gully / channel minimises water erosion; and in managing the surface and storm water, it also minimises slime / moss build up which can be treacherous for vehicles and pedestrians alike. Ensuring that water is directed off the road and into the main drainage system, is also obviously essential in minimising the risk of dangerous standing water and ice slicks in wet and icy weather conditions.

I have identified that the channel running alongside my property is in desperate need of maintenance, as there is circa 6 inches of soil, vegetation and debris bedded and blocking the channel - this will obviously have a significant effect on its effectiveness when the weather changes; with serious risk of road flooding and dangerous water slicks.

I myself have cleared out part of the channel that runs directly alongside my home, but stopped at the electrical cabinet (as you can see in the photos provided).

Further to the above, please can you schedule an operative to attend in order to continue the essential removal of the debris from the electrical cabinet, to the entrance to the public footpath; this is a distance of approximately 60 meters.

I trust you can organise this within the next couple of weeks, in preparation for the transition into Autumn.

Please can you confirm by return what date they will be attending.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Updates

  • Thank you for reporting a drainage or flooding issue.

We will investigate the issue. If additional clearance work is needed, the local highways team will prioritise the most urgent reports. Where possible, maintenance tasks will be grouped together in a schedule for efficiency.

Sometimes during periods of heavy rain, even a clear gully can be overwhelmed. Usually the water will drain away within an hour.

Every gully or drain the county council is responsible for is cleared at least once each year. Some drains in problem areas are cleared more frequently. You can find out more, including the gully emptying schedule on our website by visiting www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/highways/roads/road-maintenance

If your property is at risk of flooding please see the Flood Guide for advice and support by visiting www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/planning-and-environment/flood-risk-management/flooding-information/flood-guide

If you are driving: please never ignore road closures or enter flood water. This could put you or others in danger and invalidate your insurance.

We will provide updates about this report. Thank you again for taking the time to report this issue.
