Drain is blocked by tree roots

Reported via mobile in the The drain is blocked category anonymously at 17:16, Monday 7 October 2024

Sent to Gloucestershire County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6562717.

The drain outside 349 Hatherley Road is blocked by cedar tree roots. The cedar tree which was owned by Gloucestershire Highways has now been removed but the drain is not flowing properly. My insurance company has commissioned a drainage report which says that part of drain that is full of roots is the councils responsibility to clear and repair. Unfortunately the blockage is causing problems with sewage backing up in the pipes and is causing offensive smells and the toilet to back up. We have tried rodding the roots numerous times but this has not been effective. The drains on my property are damaged and need repair and therefore I understand that drains on council land are also likely to need to be cleared and repaired.

Updates

  • Thank you for reporting a drainage or flooding issue.

We will investigate the issue. If additional clearance work is needed, the local highways team will prioritise the most urgent reports. Where possible, maintenance tasks will be grouped together in a schedule for efficiency.

Sometimes during periods of heavy rain, even a clear gully can be overwhelmed. Usually the water will drain away within an hour.

Every gully or drain the county council is responsible for is cleared at least once each year. Some drains in problem areas are cleared more frequently. You can find out more, including the gully emptying schedule on our website by visiting www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/highways/roads/road-maintenance

If your property is at risk of flooding please see the Flood Guide for advice and support by visiting www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/planning-and-environment/flood-risk-management/flooding-information/flood-guide

If you are driving: please never ignore road closures or enter flood water. This could put you or others in danger and invalidate your insurance.

We will provide updates about this report. Thank you again for taking the time to report this issue.
